Antique Carved Oak Barley Twist Side Table

Antique Carved Oak Barley Twist Side Table

Made in England around 1920, this carved oak side table is a beautiful work of art. The oak has a beautiful patina that will continue to grow more stunning as it ages. The carvings and barleytwist turnings blend well together to form a piece that is decorated, but not too busy. The single, large drawer has dovetailed joints making it very strong. The entire piece is very sturdy and in very good condition with normal wear for a piece of this age. There is a shaped backsplash along the top that finishes this table off nicely. Overall this is a perfect piece for a variety of uses and should blend well with many different styles.

The Window of a Spanish Mission Style Villa in White - Moonee Ponds

The Window of a Spanish Mission Style Villa in White - Moonee Ponds

The facade of this Spanish Mission style villa in the Melbourne suburb of Moonee Ponds features a front window of gemetric leadlight glass. Flanked by barley twist columns the window features a shell pattern above the central pane and stepped bricks below. All these details pay homage to the Spanish Mission style.

The Spanish Mission style was typically a style that emerged in California during the interwar years and spread across the world.

Moonee Ponds, like its neighbouring boroughs of Ascot Vale and Essendon, was etablished in the late 1880s and early 1890s. However, unlike its neighbours, it was an area of affluence and therefore only had middle-class, upper middle-class and some very wealthy citizens. Houses like these were the last to populate the borough and would have suited a medium sized family of moderate means who appreciated the modernity that the villa offered.

Barley Twist Pillars: Shopfront - Lancaster Place

Barley Twist Pillars: Shopfront - Lancaster Place

The building that this shopfront is attached to, looks Edwardian, there's another similar shopfront to the left. One is Caffe Nero and the other is Pret a Manger, the original fascias have been kept. I love the barley twist pillars, which are very unusual. They then turn the corner in to Strand and there are another two.

English Oak Antique Dressing Table on Barley Twist Legs

This oak dressing table is in very good condition. It is sturdy and the finish has held up very well over the years. The mirror is beveled and does have quite abit of spotting to it. Spotting is when the silver in the mirror tarnishes. The mirror is held sturdy by two barley twist supports. The chest portion is a two over two drawer design. Each drawer has tear drop pulls, is hand cut dovetailed front and back, and the drawer bottoms are solid and beveled. Carvings adorn each drawer and the chest, while the entire piece sits on barley twist legs joined by a stretcher. Each leg has one steel caster at the bottom. Overall this piece is in very good condition with the mirror spotting being the only blemish. This dressing table was made in England and we date it from about 1920.
